In collaboration with the Tanzania National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM)

Our story

A very warm welcome to the official website of the Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU). The programme of research and capacity development implemented by MITU builds on a long history of collaborative research on HIV and related infections in Mwanza involving the Tanzanian National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), and the African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF). This collaboration dates from the late 1980s when the HIV epidemic was expanding rapidly in East Africa.

The Unit has been involved with a series of groundbreaking studies on HIV prevention and related topics. These are widely recognised by the international scientific community and have directly influenced local and international health policies. We are committed to building capacity in Tanzania and the East African region to carry out research to international standards, and are developing local scientific leadership. We have developed very close working relationships with local and national government leaders, as well as with the communities in which we conduct our research.

In this website, we provide information about who we are, where we work and what we do. We also provide news about our own work as well as related work from other groups, and how you can contact us.
