Our values

The mission of the Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit is to contribute to improving health through the development and evaluation of interventions against HIV and other health problems by conducting research, including clinical trials, to the highest international standards; to enhance the capacity to carry out such research in Tanzania and the East African region; and to contribute to the translation of research findings into heath policy.

The Unit’s pursuit of its mission is shaped by the following operating principles that inform its ongoing activities:

  • MITU mission statement +

The mission of the Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit is to contribute to improving health through the development and evaluation of interventions against HIV and other health problems by conducting research, including clinical trials, to the highest international standards; to enhance the capacity to carry out such research in Tanzania and the East African region; and to contribute to the translation of research findings into heath policy.
  • A focus on intervention trials +

The Unit’s work will focus on testing the efficacy and/or effectiveness of interventions, with initial emphasis on promising interventions against HIV and other sexual health problems.
  • Multidisciplinary approach +

The Unit recognises that most health problems are caused by a complex interplay of multiple biological and social causes. As a result, the Unit promotes the pursuit of multidisciplinary research, applying both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Evidence-based approach +

The Unit conducts research that is scientifically-sound, based on empirical data and rigorous analysis, and is subject to critical peer review.
  • Addressing the most important public health problems +

The Unit is committed to conducting research which will generate the knowledge required to address the most important public health problems affecting Tanzania and the East African region.
  • A commitment to building sustainable capacity +

In pursuing activities to meet its mission, the Unit recognises the critical need to train local research scientists to become leaders capable of conducting research to the highest international standards and attracting international research funding.
