The Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU) is a collaborative research Unit based at the National Institute for Medical Research campus in Mwanza, Tanzania. The mission of MITU is to contribute to improving health through the development and evaluation of interventions against HIV and other health problems by conducting research, including clinical trials, to the highest international standards; to enhance the capacity to carry out such research in Tanzania and the East African region; and to contribute to the translation of research findings into health policy. MITU is about to start conducting a study which will provide health and wellbeing check-ups for adolescents (Y-Check services) and assess whether young people will take up the services, how they feel about the service, and how to improve the check-up visit for future adolescents. The Unit is now inviting applications from highly motivated and suitably qualified candidates to fill the following two positions:
Position: Field Coordinator (1 Position)
The successful applicant will have a bachelor degree, at least 3 years’ post-qualification experience in research project management, managerial and organizational skills, excellent written and oral communication skills in English, and certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) for the conduct of human research.
Specific Responsibilities
- To assist the PIs and study coordinator in planning, management and supervision of the research operations, ensuring that the study is carried out to the highest international standards
- To assist in developing and maintaining an excellent consultative relationship with local government authorities where the study is taking place.
- To develop and regularly update standard operating procedures in accordance with the study protocol
- To train the research assistants on the conduct of research in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) in the study protocol
- Lead the field research teams including the research assistants, research nurses and research clinicians
- Contribute to the preparation of scientific reports and publications and presentations at national meetings
- Participate in developing the capacity of junior project staff
- Promote MITU and its core values, and play a supportive role in the delivery of its day-to-day operations and strategic goals
- Play an active part in promoting the scientific life at the NIMR Mwanza campus
- Undertake such other tasks as may reasonably be expected by the PIs and Study Coordinator
Essential Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in related public health field
- At least 3-yearexperience in coordinating field research activities
- Experience working in research involving adolescents
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Swahili
- Trained on GCP with appropriate certificate
Desirable Qualifications
- Managerial and organizational skills
- Commitment to working as part of a multidisciplinary research team
